Measure usable glass, not the sash

Measure the uninterrupted glass face at its narrowest horizontal and vertical points. Do not include the frame. Subtract the space occupied by raised handles, locks, vents, decorative bars, deep rubber seals, stickers and hardware the robot cannot cross. If a mullion splits a window, treat each section as a separate pane. Both dimensions must meet the manual's minimum; adequate square footage does not rescue a strip that is too narrow.

Take measurements in several places because older frames may not be square. Photograph the corners and obstructions. Then compare your numbers with the exact model and regional SKU manual. Published minimums vary, and one product's threshold must never be assigned to another product from the same brand. If only body dimensions are listed, that is insufficient evidence of working-area compatibility.

Why small panes challenge navigation

The machine needs clearance for its entire body, boundary sensors and every turn in its programmed route. On marginal glass it may encounter two edges before completing a maneuver, cycle repeatedly, stop with an alert or leave a central band. Round rotating-pad robots and square robots may behave differently, but shape by itself is not a reliable predictor. The published operating limit and instructions remain decisive.

Frame height matters too. A raised frame can provide a physical boundary for a model designed around frame contact, while an unusually low seal may not behave as expected. Frameless glass requires explicit open-edge capability even when the pane is otherwise large enough. Do not interpret generic 'edge detection' text as a frameless approval without supporting documentation.

A defensible small-window buying process

Make a list of every pane you want the robot to clean, then identify the smallest clear width and height. Filter out any product whose documented minimum exceeds either number. Next verify framed or frameless support, glass angle, surface treatment and obstacle clearance. Finally check that you can attach, supervise and remove the unit from each pane.

If one or two tiny sidelights fail the filter, consider a partial-fit purchase rather than rejecting automation for the whole home. State the exception clearly: the robot can serve larger compatible panes, while the narrow sections need manual cleaning. A trustworthy finder should label undocumented dimensions 'verify first,' not estimate a fit so it can return a product.

First run on a tight pane

Begin with the most accessible compatible small pane, not an exterior window. Fit clean pads, prepare solution exactly as directed, connect power and tether, and hold the handle until normal adhesion is confirmed. Observe the first route closely. Stop if the robot repeatedly strikes hardware, cannot turn, bunches a seal, loses traction or issues a pressure or edge warning.

Do not move the robot by hand while it is operating to help it finish a narrow strip. Retrieve it according to the manual and use a safer cleaning method. Small-pane compatibility is a pass-or-fail constraint, not something to overcome through improvisation.
